It’s been a while since I did a UI post, and it has been through a fair bit of change since then – what with the changing to shammy and all.
Unfortunately, GIMP doesn’t seem to have basic draw shape tools which are handy for such posts, so the quality is low from going via paint. Yay Paint!

So, combat related addons on screen.
1. Totem Timers – Pretty standard Shaman addon. It can be used on it’s own for placing totems, but I still have my main ones (and a set of secondary totems, set to shift) keybound. I use it mainly for placing totems I rarely use – resistance totems for example – and to keep track of what totems I do have down.
2. XPerl – in the form of a single focus frame. This is all that remains of my XPerl. I usually focus the main tank as a DPS, so I can /assist their target. On fights where I need to DPS adds an OT picks up, I focus the OT. On boss fights where I am healing, I focus the boss to watch for nasty spells.
3. Grid – a pretty standard addon for end-game healers, but also very nice for any other player, as it makes incredibly efficient use of space. For healers, it can be set to show all sorts of things – an example is highlighted with a purple circle. That brown dot tells me Earth Shield is not active on the target.
I don’t need to know this on Enhancement, but I do on Resto. It’s not the best way to keep track – I have to set it to appear for all tank classes, so it will show even for Tree druids, for example – but it does help. It also shows the value of incoming heals, which is handy to avoid multiple healers wasting mana. Plus, it does lots more.
4. Big Wigs – keeps track of boss abilities. Again, another very standard add for raiding. DBM is another favourite, but I found it too spammy for my liking.
5. MetaHUD – here things get messy, with addon overlap. The Health and Mana bars, as well as target name and debuffs, are provided by MetaHUD, which replaces the usual Player frame. Like grid, this makes efficient use of space, and when you get used to it it’s incredibly easy to keep track of health and mana.
6. Omen – threat meter. Need I say more? I watch my cooldowns like a hawk on the action bars, which is why Omen is located directly above.
7. Bartender4 Action Bars, augmented with OmniCC – some people condense their bars right down… I still like to have lots of stuff shown. These are basically scaled down versions of the bars I had in my last UI post, so I could fit the chat window into the corner, nice and snug. OmniCC shows a big, easy to read number for any ability currently on cooldown.
8. Recount – Again, pretty standard. Some people don’t show this on boss fights. I do, not so much for the amagad lookitmuhdeeps! but to make sure I’m actually doin’itrite.
9. Simple Buff Bars – To purge the chunky default Buff/Debuff bars. Not much to be said except that doing AT dailies with that setup is a pain, as the “Bested City” debuffs take up a lot of space.
10. Mik’s Scrolling Battle Text – Orange box, plus the text in the centre of my HUD, plus the orange dots. Shows incoming and outgoing damage and heals – and it fits very snugly over my MetaHUD bars, which is very nice indeed, and the reason it has replaced SCT for me.
However, now that I’ve been raiding on Shaman, I’ve realised that I need to nix Aura Gains (Centre). Those take up a lot of space and I don’t like them or need them. The cooldown alerts (top) will need to go, too. I watch my cooldowns like a hawk – I don’t need to be told when abilities are available.
11. Shock and Awe – Enhancement Shaman addon. Does a lot of things – shows cooldowns of main abilities, tracks Maelstrom procs, alerts me when Shields and weapon enchants aren’t present. It also does another thing, but if you need to use that function, eugh. I have it set to show only my Maelstrom Procs, and Feral Spirit bar – this bar segments when your wolves are up, showing the time remaining before they despawn.
Misc things that aren’t labeled or shown.
- SexyMap (Top Right) – I like having a pretty map. So what?
The map looks different depending on character. As you can see, on Ellaria, it’s pretty simple… glowing white ring with an elemental icon in each corner to represent being a Shaman. Faulsey has an aiming reticule overlaid and pawprints up the side to represent BM Hunter.
- Chatter (Bottom Left)– more options for customising the basic chat frame.
- FuBar with GroupFu and MoneyFu (had more before, but those weren’t updated for 3.1 last I checked, top) – GroupFu mostly fills the role right-clicking my own frame did, as far as leaving parties etc are concerned. MoneyFu gives a handy breakdown of how much I’ve made in a session/day/week. Also shows random AddonFu’s.
- Player EXP Bar (Green bar next to Map)- small, easy to move bars for Exp, Reputation and pet Exp. Used because MetaHUD means no XPerl Exp/Rep bars, and the bartender ones are horrible.
- Atlas Loot – In game loot browser, I use this to set wishlists of what I want from bosses.
- Auction Lite – doesn’t do all the stuff Auctioneer does, but nonetheless works very well as a nice little auction addon, plus it shows vendor prices in item tooltips.
- Livestock – Mount and Pet manager. I use this for random mount macros.
- Baud Bag – condenses bags into one big bag, which I can keep nice and tidy with great ease.
- eCasting Bar – my Quartz replacement. I have no idea if Quartz has been updated by now, because this works just fine. Shows own cast bar (relatively useless for Enhancement, handy as Restoration), target cast bar (always, always handy) and Focus cast bar (handy for healers focusing on boss).
- Outfitter – changes armour and weapons. With 3.1, it can be set to change automatically if you have dual spec and switch specs. Very handy.
- Rating Buster – breaks things like Crit Rating or Strength down into what they do for your class. Somewhat annoying for an enhancement Shaman, as it does not, by default, show Physical stats for Shammies, so I had to set that up myself. When you’ve got it tweaked, though, it’s wonderful.
Jeez, I really use a lot of addons, don’t I?
I just like tweaking with my UI, to be honest. While I consider things like Omen, MetaHUD (due to being so used to it, I can’t really go back to normal unit frames with ease), Bartender and OmniCC essential, I can live without most of these.
I just don’t like to.
Things I need to know likerightnowomg as DPS are in a column roughly in the middle of the screen – Bigwigs on top, my main action bars at the bottom, with HUD and Omen in between, and debuff bars sneaking in on the right. Grid is off to the side – it’s easy to consult when needed, but I don’t need it to be centre screen all the time. Same with Chat. Map, Buffs, secondary action bars and Recount are on the other side because, again, I don’t need these to be right in the centre.
It works pretty well for me, but I’m sure Nibuca would have a heart attack just looking at that mess! –grin-
